ELLSWORTH – Charles Blackwood Frank Jr., 78, passed away June 26, 2008, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. He was born March 24, 1930, in Camden, N.J., the son of Charles B. Frank Sr. and Kathryn Mae (Eby) Frank. He attended the public schools in Audubon, N.J., University of Maryland, University of Maine and the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and moved to Ellsworth in 1951, while stationed at the Naval Security Group Activity, Winter Harbor. He participated in societal activities serving as treasurer of First Congregational Church of Ellsworth; director and president of Downeast YMCA; treasurer of University of Maine Extension Campership program for special children; director of CPO Support Group for Shinai Gakuen Home of the Municipal Institute of Children’s Welfare, Yokohama, Japan, where he was presented a plaque by the mayor of Yokohama, Japan, for his work with the orphanage. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans; U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, Naval Intelligence Professionals, Inc.; SLUG of Maine; Ellsworth Rotary and enjoyed his many years as a Rotarian, highlighted with the honor in 2000 of being made a Paul Harris Fellow. Charlie was a member of SYSOP on both the Mainware and Celebration computer bulletin boards; was active as a student, instructor, author and director with the NovaNET Computer Education Research Laboratory of the University of Illinois. His interests were in all aspects of the computer world, including helping young people learn about computers and program-ming at his home office, ham radio – N1IKO, books and Ellsworth City Library, where he volunteered for the Books on Call program for seven years; and did volunteer work at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with the Life Line and Health Link programs. His naval career was in communications, electronics, cryptography, computer programming and intelligence activities. He was an atomic veteran having participated in more than 40 atmospheric nuclear detonations; served on ships, submarines and shore stations. His final service years were in the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C. Upon retirement he worked for National Cash Register Co., and Depositors Trust Co., in automatic data processing. At retirement, he was an officer of Liberty National Bank, Ellsworth. He was a disabled, service connected, combat veteran, 100 percent T/P after 1982; and served during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Davis) Frank; three children, Lawrence Frank and his wife, Carole and sons, Peter and Michael Petros of Ellsworth; Jeffrey Frank and his wife, Janna, daughter, Kelsey and sons, Matthew and Daniel of Scarborough; and Kristin Gordon and her husband, Mark and daughters, Kira and Audra of Scarborough. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, James W. Davis and his wife, Nancy, of Ellsworth Falls; sister-in-law, Letitia Davis of Arlington, Va.; as well as nieces, nephews and their children. Calling hours will be 10:30-11:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a memorial service beginning 11:30 a.m. A reception will be immediately after the service. Private inter-ment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
