ENFIELD – Charles E. Batchelder, 87, husband of Clydie (Rollins) Batchelder, died Jan. 27, 2005, at a Howland healthcare facility. He was born June 11, 1917, in Burlington, the son of Ralph Evans and Adelaide (Matthews) Batchelder. Charles was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Italy. He worked for Old Town Shoe Co. in Old Town and for Spot-Bilt Shoe in Bangor, retiring in 1979. After retirement, he went to work for Ansewn in Howland, where he worked until he was 70. He was always a “tinkerer” and enjoyed fishing and camping. In addition to his wife, Clydie, he is survived by five children, Elizabeth Ranco of Alton, Evans Batchelder and Linda, of Enfield, Josephine Hanson and Eugene, of Charleston, Melissa Curtis and Calvin, of Lowell, and David Rollins and Penny, of South Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Leslie J. Crosby. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Town Line Hill Cemetery, Enfield.
