WHITING – Charles H. Fitzsimmons Jr., 57, passed away unexpectedly April 2, 2006. He was born Feb. 18, 1949, in West Lubec, the son of Charles H. Fitzsimmons Sr. and Florence (Ramsdell) Fitzsimmons. Charlie worked 34 years as a teacher in the Edmunds Consolidated School. He also served as a basketball coach for 25 years at Edmunds Cons. School, Lubec High School, and Washington Academy. In 1967, he won the state two-mile in cross-country as a junior at Lubec High School. He received the highest award in Boy Scouts, the God and Country Award, under the supervision of the Rev. Donald Stockford. Charlie was an avid sports fan and enjoyed basketball, tennis, baseball, cross-country skiing, golf and ping-pong. He especially enjoyed watching baseball and boxing. He was a passionate fan of the New York Yankees and Muhammad Ali. He took great pride in being physically fit and was an exceptional athlete. He loved the ocean and being on the water. Charlie also enjoyed genealogy work and tracing family history. His family was the most important thing in his life, as there was no greater joy for him. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Sally (Albee) Fitzsimmons; son, Chad Fitzsimmons of East Machias; daughter, Sandra (Fitzsimmons) Anderson and husband, Michael, of Machias; mother, Florence Fitzsimmons of Lubec; sister, Una Hatch and husband, William, of Bucksport; sister, Maureen Albee and husband, Brian, of East Machias; brother, Daniel Fitzsimmons and wife, Noreen, of Lubec; three grandchildren, Zain Fitzsimmons, Kyle Anderson and Jaydin Anderson; father-in-law, Keith Albee of East Machias; special lifelong friend, Carl Hood of Lubec; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Charles H. Fitzsimmons Sr. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the Christian Temple Church in Lubec officiated by Pastor Scott Porter. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
