MATTAWAMKEAG – Evelyn Mae “Tootie” Markie, 69, wife of Leon Markie Sr., died April 2, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Oct. 11, 1936, in Norcross, the daughter of Cecil and Clara (Grondin) Richards. Evelyn was an organizer and life member of TOPS. She was an outstanding mother and grandmother. She loved shopping and spending time with her grandchildren by the pool. She was loved by everyone who knew her. Evelyn also enjoyed cooking, making sweets for her family, camping, fairs and craft fairs. In addition to her husband, Leon of Mattawamkeag, she is survived by six children, Garell Markie and his wife, Phyllis, Scott Markie and his fiance, Lisa Ciarrochi, all of Mattawamkeag, Wanda Hunter and her husband, Allen II, of Alabama, David Markie, Leon Markie Jr. and his wife, Cindy, and Leonard Markie and his wife, Lynn, all of Mattawamkeag; three brothers, Donald Richards of New Hampshire, Austin “Spike” Richards and John Richards, both of Mattawamkeag; two sisters, Doris Coon of East Millinocket and Dale Naaykens of Medway; 13 grandchildren, Toby, Deziree, Billy Rae, David, Dustin, Duncan, Megan, Grady, Tripp, Zachary, Dylan, Haley and Bailey; several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special cat, Peppy. She was predeceased by a son, Billy Markie; two sisters, Jeanette Erickson and Priscilla Hartsgrove; and one brother, Harold Richards. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at the Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Rd., Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev.
