ROCKPORT and HOULTON Charles Putnam Osborne, 86, died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center as a result of complications from recently diagnosed cancer. He was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Bangor, the son of William and Molly (Putnam) Osborne. Charlie grew up in Danforth and later graduated from Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps. After his discharge, he returned home, where he married Carol Maxine Gardiner, also of Houlton, Nov. 18, 1948. His long career with the U.S. government began with the Border Patrol in Texas in the early 1950s, continued with the U.S. Customs Service in several Maine communities, and ended with the U.S. Immigration Service, Houlton, in 1980. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, Charlie played semi-pro baseball with the Houlton Collegians in the 1940s. His passion later became golf, which he enjoyed playing with his wife Carol and his many friends. Charlie is survived by his two loving daughters, Hannah C. Osborne of Fairfield and Catherine Graham of Belfast; two grandsons, Ian J. Graham and Nathan A. Stevens; and two nieces. He was predeceased by his wife, Carol (Gardner) Osborne; his granddaughter, Carol Kendra Graham; and his sister, Hannah (Osborne) Boynton. Friends may call 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service 11 a.m. at Dunn Funeral Home.
