OLD TOWN – Robert Edwin Miles, 70, passed away peacefully Sept. 2, 2007, surrounded by his devoted and loving family. He was born Oct. 29, 1936, in Stillwater, the son of Arthur I. and Freida (Gould) Miles. Bob graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1955. He worked in the family construction business and he was proud of his service as a firefighter in Bangor. He married Alice Dunn and together they raised many children: biological, adopted and foster children. Bob attended the School of Alcoholic Studies, Durham, N.H., and later he supported recovering alcoholics with an aftercare program. He was proud of his 38 years of sobriety. Bob was a member of the Star in the East Masonic Lodge No. 60 of Old Town. He was past master of the lodge, district grand master for two years and marshal. Bob was awarded Mason of the Year twice from his lodge. He was also a Shriner. Bob also held a membership with the American Legion Post No. 84. Bob will always be remembered as a family man. He loved to spend time with his family and found great enjoyment in family reunions. He held a special place in his heart for children. In his spare time he liked to putter around the house and collect hats and teddy bears. He was predeceased by his parents; very special cousin, Lawrence Hanscom; and best friend, Wayne Jackson. Bob is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice Dunn Miles; children, Frank Freitas and his wife, Debra, of California, Kelley Mitchell of Stillwater, Robert Miles Jr. of Stillwater, Kevin Miles and his wife, Sherry, of Old Town, Randy Miles of Bangor, Sharri Mitchell and her husband, Roger, of New Hampshire, and Matthew Miles of Stillwater; grandchildren, Ryan Miles, Laura Mitchell, Samantha Matchekosky, and Jonathan, Aaron and Stephanie Mitchell, all of New Hampshire, Tony Freitas, Jason Lazar, Valentino Freitas, and Franklin Freitas, all of California, and Suzanne, Eric and Katie Roy of Old Town; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Brianna Miles of New Hampshire and Cameron, Sarah, Christopher and William Rowe of New Hampshire; adopted grandchildren, Beth and Becky Standley of Old Town and Katie Lynn Thomas Lawrence of Bangor; sister, Marilyn Grindel and her husband, Richard, of Pennsylvania; brothers, Roger Miles and his wife, Sally, of Wiscasett, and Arthur Miles and his wife, Annette, of Hancock; and special friends, Chet Davis of Old Town, David Young of Brewer, Stanley Hanscom of Hermon, and LeRoy Campbell of Bangor. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Federated Church of Stillwater, 80 Bennoch Road, Stillwater, with the Rev. Joan DeSanctis officiating. Services will commence with the Masonic memorial service. Interment will be after the service at Lawndale Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a time of refreshment and fellowship after services at the church hall. Arrangements are in the care of Birmingham Funeral Home.
