NEWPORT – Charles Pentland, 86, passed away Jan. 18, 2008, at his resi-dence. He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Stoneham, Mass., a son of Roger and Doris (Elliot) Pentland. Charlie attended Clark University and Andover-Newton Theological Seminary. He married the former Betty Mozingo, Nov. 22, 1944. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and was in charge of an Army motor pool in occupied Japan. He was a vice president of personnel at Parker Manufacturing Co., Worcester, Mass. He was a certified lay minister and served in numerous churches through-out Maine and Massachusetts. As a jack-of-all-trades, he also was a small engine repairman, a licensed electrician, a gunsmith, a clock repairman, a farmer and a gardener. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Charlie served as town moderator in Sutton, Mass., and had served as president of both the Sutton, Mass., and Newport historical societies. He was a past president of Newport Area Chamber of Commerce. He also chaired the NAFA group, which organized the 175th Newport anniversary celebration. Charlie was a member of Corinna United Methodist Church, Corinna Post No. 73 American Legion and was also a member of the Small Engine and Tractors Association. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Betty of Newport, he is survived by five children, Sandra Wilson of Worcester, Mass., Susan and her husband, Kenneth Stowe, of Topsfield, Mass., Charles I. Pentland Jr. of Mineral Wells, Texas, the Rev. Edward J. Pentland and his wife, Debbra, of Whitinsville, Mass., and Priscilla and husband, Stephen Hoekstra, of Etna; nine grandchildren, Laurel, Kelly, Sean, Heidi, Veronica, Martin, Benjamin, Jesse and Sam; and four great-grandchildren. Char-lie’s son, Roger, predeceased him in 1981. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Corinna United Methodist Church with the Revs. Sharon Lovejoy, Bruce Hudson and Edward Pentland officiating.
