BANGOR – Charlotte Boynton Smith, 88, died Jan. 25, 2004, at a local nursing home. She was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Bangor, the daughter of Dexter and Louisa (Wood) Smith. She attended Bangor schools until age 15 when she began a year long battle with polio. Charlotte then attended the Emma Willard School for three years, the Eastman Music School and Boston University, and was a lifetime member of the Browning Society. Her education instilled in her a lifelong love for the arts, particularly classical music, literature and poetry. She often spoke quite eloquently on these subjects. Surviving are one niece, Louisa Alden Polistock Lutes; and three nephews, Charles Francis Gibbs of Newburgh, Dexter Southworth Polistock and Demitri Alden Polistock. Charlotte was predeceased by her sisters, Sara Louise Gibbs and Priscilla Alden Polistock. She will be fondly remembered by her devoted caregivers, Joanne Sargent of Bangor, Mildred Clark of Plymouth, Holly Young of Bangor, and Sandra Nealley of Winterport. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher of All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
