BREWER and BANGOR Charlotte E. Cross, 82, devoted wife of 49 years to the late Clyde E. Cross Sr., died May 27, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Dec. 24, 1925, in Bangor, daughter of Thornton G. and Helen E. (Merrill) Gray. Charlotte graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1943 and was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph Co., until her marriage. She returned to her work in 1957 and retired in 1981. Charlotte was a resident of Brewer for 45 years and Orrington for 23 years. She spent her summers at Green Lake from 1929 to 1946 and at Lucerne from 1957 to 2002. She was a member, past president and past life member representative of Retired Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are two sons, Clyde E. Cross Jr. and his wife, Teresa, of Florida and Daniel M. Cross and his wife, Helga, of Milford; six grandchildren, Clyde E. Cross III and his wife, Donel, of Florida, Violeta E. Sue and her husband, Warren, of California, Nancy E. Cross of Florida, Melony J. Cross of Cali-fornia, Joseph P. Spruce and his wife, Victoria, of Mississippi and Peter J. Spruce and his wife, Kathleen, of Orono; five great-grandchildren, James T. Spruce of Orono, Gabrielle E. Sue and Catherine E. Sue, both of California, Clyde E. “CJ” Cross IV and Madilyn Cross, both of Florida; a brother-in-law, Frank E. Cross and his wife, Sherry, of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Norma Gray of Florida; two special cousins, Barbara M. Kimball of Brewer and her daughter, Janet Kimball; and a very special group of friends and classmates known as the “Monday Lunch Bunch.” In addition to her husband, Clyde, she was predeceased by a brother, L. Gordon Gray. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service Saturday at Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
