EXETER, N.H. – Charlotte Tozier Foster, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, with her family in Exeter, N.H. She was born Sept. 14, 1920, in Unity, to Lloyd W. and Alberta T. (Thompson) Tozier. Charlotte attended Unity schools, graduating from high school in 1938, where she was the pianist for a music ensemble. She continued to play piano throughout her life, bringing joy to many. She attended Beal Business College, Bangor, then worked as a teller at Eastern Trust and Banking, Bangor, where she met her lifelong partner, Frank F. Foster. When World War II ended, they were married at the Tozier family home, Aug. 17, 1947. Charlotte was a stay-at-home mom and led an active volunteer life involved in the schools, teaching religious education, and fundraising through catering for the Women’s Auxiliary Guild at the First Universalist Church of Bangor, where she was a member. In her later years, she worked at Sunnyside Greenhouse and registered voters at the polls. Charlotte was an avid gardener and an excellent cook. She shared her love of art and nature with many. She was also a keen follower of stocks and finance. Frank and Charlotte played bridge every weekend with friends. After Frank died in 1984, she continued to play bridge with friends on a regular basis. Some of these same friends cultivated her interest in traveling to Monhegan Island for bird watching. In her 60s and 70s, she was a caregiver for neighbors’ children. She played a key role in many young people’s lives as she packed lunches, delivered kids to baseball games or dance classes and helped with homework. As a neighbor, Charlotte was well known for her regular gifts of her homemade biscuits, custards and blueberry muffins. Her wide circle of friends included many from her hometown of Unity, where the family spent summer weeks on the lake. She also spent many hours with her church friends at the Universalist’s Hersey Retreat at Sandy Point. Her sense of humor and love of her family and friends brought her many more years of life than expected. She is survived by her son, Lloyd F. Foster of Brighton, Mass.; her daughter, Sylvia J. Foster of Durham, N.H.; her sister, Carolyn T. Atherton of Sugarland, Texas; her brother, William H. Tozier of Hallowell; sister-in-law, Gladys Tozier-Moore of Dallas; her many treasured beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, John W. Tozier of Dallas. The family would love to have relatives and friends attend a reception to hear people’s experiences with Charlotte. The reception will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Isaac Farrar Mansion, corner of Union Street and Second Street, No. 17, Bangor. The family invites people to bring memories of Charlotte to tell. A separate graveside burial service will be held in the spring.
