ORONO and SANGERVILLE – Claire S. Sanders, 95, died March 29, 2006, at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born Dec. 14, 1910, in Sangerville, the daughter of Charles W. and Cora (Murray) Sanders. Claire graduated from Sangerville High School, attended Westbrook Junior College and the Maine School of Commerce and then completed her higher education at the University of Maine, graduating with a B.S. degree in Home Economics in 1934. During her student years at the University, Claire was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, and following her graduation she served as an alumna adviser to the local chapter for several years. Claire was a long time member of the Orono-Old Town branch of the A.A.U.W., the Orono Womans’ Club, was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Sangerville and held dual membership with the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono, participating in many of that church’s activities. After 34 years of service to the University, Claire retired from University employment in 1973. She started her work at the University as a secretary in the Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Technology, then moved to the Registrar’s Office, and finally to the office of the Associate Dean in the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture. Claire is survived by Naida MacNaughton of Eastport, Enola Tyler of Skowhegan and several other cousins. Friends may call 3-5 p.m. Friday, March 31, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Sangerville Unitarian-Univeralist Church, with the Rev. Lornagrace Stuart, pastor of the Church of Universal Fellowship of Orono, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Elmwood Cemetery, Guilford. Friends of Claire, who may wish to honor her, may send contributions to the Claire S. Sanders ’34 Scholarship Fund at the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469. Claire established this fund in June 2005 to assist future students at the University of Maine from Sangerville and Piscataquis County in furthering their education at the University of Maine.
