MADISON – Clifford L. Swenson Jr., 74, passed away Sept. 28, 2005, at Thayer Hospital, Waterville. He was born Dec. 16, 1930, in Waltham, Mass., the son of Freda and Clifford L. Swenson Sr. He attended Belmont, Mass. schools and graduated in 1952 from the University of Maine, Orono, with a degree in forestry. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and upon discharge was a reservist and company commander of the U. S. Unit in Rangeley. He was employed as a forester for the State of Maine and in December, 1958 he was hired by Seven Islands Land Company as a forester for their Rangeley District. In 1980, he became the company’s president, retiring in 1995 and continued to serve as the chair of the Seven Islands Board. He was a member of SWOAM and the Maine State Tree Farm organizations. He was the first state chair of the Forestry Licensing Board and a former member of SAF and APA. In 1987, he settled in Madison with his wife, Germaine, where they enjoyed tending to their flower gardens, watching wildlife, traveling around the area, delivering Meals on Wheels for Senior Spectrum and enjoying his dog, Misty. In addition to his wife, Germaine, he is survived by two daughters, Vyonne Manovill and husband, Tom, of Castleton, Vt., Jennifer Gilliland and husband, John, of Snow Hill, Md.; three grandsons, Sean, Ryan and Jacob, three granddaughters, Samantha, Brooke and Emily; and two nieces and two nephews. Also surviving are seven stepchildren, Anne Gregory of Falmouth, Dennis Marquis and wife, Wendy, of Rangeley, Michael Marquis and wife, Kathy, of Kennebunkport, James Marquis and wife, Maxine, of Belgrade, Kathleen Marquis-Girard and husband, Mark, of North Yarmouth, Stephen Marquis, Paula Schoenthaler and husband, Mark, of Skowhegan; and nine step-grandchildren, Karen, David, Amanda, Benjamin, Justin, Megan, Audrey, Lindsey and Michele; and one step-great-grandchild. He is survived by his dear college classmate, Frank Beal, of Wilton. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Francis Terry and two stepdaughters, Michele Wright and Patricia Bolduc. Visiting hours will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, with prayers at 6 p.m. at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. At his request, there will be no funeral service. A private graveside service will be held in Rangeley.
