WEST BATH – Clifford P. Tinkham, 80, of Foster Point Road died Wed-nesday, March 10, 2004 at a Brunswick Hospital. He was born June 13, 1923, in Livermore Falls, the son of Clifford B. and Stella (Flanders) Tinkham. In 1940 he graduated from Livermore Falls High School. On April 19, 1944, he married Audrey Nelson. He received his BS degree in 1947 and his masters in 1954 from the University of Maine in Orono. He entered the U. S. Army Air force during World War II and served as a Captain and pilot of a B17 Bomber. While there and stationed at Thurleigh, England he flew 35 missions over Europe and was awarded an air medal with four oak leaf clusters. He was employed as principal of Bridgton High School, Superintendent of Schools at Mt. Desert Island School Union in Bar Harbor and later as Superintendent of Schools for West Bath and Bath, retiring in 1978. He then became the Assistant Superintendent of School Union No. 75 in Topsham until 1985. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregation in Bath, served as President of Maine School Superintendent Association in 1972, President of the Bath Rotary Club from 1974-1975, the action committee of Maine School Mngt. Association, chairman of the Bath Housing Authority from 1978-1988, member of Masonic Bodies, the Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, life member of the Bath Lodge of Elks where he served as treasurer, member of the Maine Retirees Association, former member of the Down East Yacht Club, and the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Nelson Tinkham of West Bath; one son, William N. Tinkham and his wife, Donna, of Bath; one daughter, Patricia Taggart and her husband, Walter, of West Bath; one daughter-in-law, Jean Tinkham of Portland; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, John Tinkham in 1991. A Celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the United Church of Christ Congregation in Bath with the Rev. Bill Bliss officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the home of his daughter Patricia Taggart on the Foster Point Road in West Bath. Burial will be held at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morse High School Scholarship Fund, 826 High St., Bath, 04530.
