MEDFORD – Clyde Austin Hichborn, 94, husband of the late Winona (Lancaster) Hichborn, died March 31, 2005, at his home. He was born Aug. 29, 1910, at Medford, the son of Reuben C. and Katie M. (Cranmore) Hichborn. Clyde graduated from Higgins Classical Institute, Farmington Normal School and the University of Maine, Orono. He taught school many years, was principal and also Superintendent of Schools. He served four years during World War II, and was a Captain in the Adjutant General’s Corps at time of discharge. The Hichborn Middle School in Howland was named for Clyde and Winona Hichborn and dedicated Dec. 12, 1971. Clyde served nine terms in the State Legislature. In June 1989, Clyde made a unique and colorful gesture as he crossed the aisle and joined the Democratic Party. Clyde was predeceased by his parents and wife; and granddaughter, Rachel L. Hichborn.
