BUCKSPORT – Clyde B. Hutchins, 73, died June 10, 2004, at a Blue Hill hospital, following a long illness. He was born March 15, 1931, in Castine, the son of Alton and Eleanor (Grindle) Hutchins. He graduated from Bucksport High School in 1950, and was employed by St. Regis Paper Co., Bucksport, for many years, retiring from Champion Paper Co., as superintendent of Bucksport Water Co. He loved Bucksport athletics and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. He coached Little League and high school football, and was a longtime and very active member of the Bucksport Booster Club. He served on the Bucksport School Committee, Town Council, and Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Felicity Masonic Lodge No. 19 AF&AM and the Silver Lake Cemetery Committee. His “coffee buddies” will sadly miss him. Clyde is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan C. (Hammons) Hutchins of Bucksport; two daughters, Shelley Gavett and husband, Peter, of Orono, and Susan King of Bangor; one son, Michael Hutchins and wife, Carol, of Portland; seven grandchildren, Michelle Clement and husband, Larry, of Bucksport, Michael Dunbar and wife, Christine, of Middlebury, Vt., Daniel Astbury of South Burlington, Vt., Amy Astbury of Bangor, Gretchen Gavett of Orono, Peter Gavett II of Orono, and Katie Hutchins of Portland; two great-granddaughters, Brianna and Jillian, both of Bucksport; five siblings, Harold Hutchins of Bangor, John Hutchins and wife, Diane, of Castine, Brenda Moore and husband, Dick, of Ocala, Fla., Linda Wilson and husband, Chandler, of Bucksport, Terry Hutchins of Bucksport; several nieces and nephews; many friends. Clyde was predeceased by his mother in 1954; his father in 1988; sister, Louise Hutchins in 1934; brother, Lyman Hutchins in 1956; mother and father in-law, Eugene and Margaret Hammons; brother-in-law, Charles Hammons; aunt, Clara Hammons. A celebration of Clyde’s life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Interment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport. In appreciation of the wonderful care that Clyde received at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to a Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Activity Fund care of Tammy Grice, P.O. Box 823, Blue Hill, ME 04614, for the specific use of outfitting an outdoor patio with furniture so that it may be enjoyed by other patients, their families, and the hospital staff as well.
