COLONEL AUSTIN F. JOY WINTER HARBOR and PORTLAND – Colonel Austin F. Joy, U.S. Air Force, Retired, of Winter Harbor, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005, at Maine Medical Center of natural causes. Austin F. Joy was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Winter Harbor, the second son of Charles N. and Golden M. Sargent Joy. He graduated from Winter Harbor High School. He attended New England Aircraft School of aircraft and engines maintenance, a special government course at MIT, command and staff college courses at the industrial college of armed forces and numerous courses at the University of Alabama, Montgomery. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940, and was discharged as a master sergeant in 1945. He joined the Maine Air National Guard in January 1947, and continued with the Air National Guard and the U.S. Air Force until his retirement, as a colonel in 1979. During his career, he had obtained all enlisted ranks, both junior and chief warrant officers rank and all officer ranks to colonel, except second and first lieutenant. He commanded numerous units and had several tours with Headquarters USAF. His awards were the good conduct medal, Asiatic Pacific campaign medal with four battle stars, National Defense service metal with Pearl Harbor bronze star, the active duty service metal, Air Force longevity service award with Four Oak Leaf clusters, the Presidential unit citation, the Air Force meritorious service medal, the legion of Merit, the National Guard meritorious service metal, the Eagle award, and the State of Maine Honorable Service Metal. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Martha Ann Joy, on July 5, 1992. He is survived by three children, Deborah and husband, Wayne Martin, of Portland, David Joy of Annandale, Va., Christopher Joy and his wife, Kim, of Appleton, Wis.; four grandchildren, Joy, Heather, Erinn and Katherine; two great-grand-children, Mason and Maggie, also a special friend, Ruth Bishop of Portland. A graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the Brookside Cemetery in Winter Harbor. Funeral arrangements by Jordan- Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. <>
