Section of the Wildlife Society, Maine Chapter of the Wildlife Society and was appointed to The Wildlife Society’s Certification Review Board. He was the first chair for the Directors of School Administrative District No. 63, founding chair for the Eddington-Clifton Civic Center, appointed to the first planning board for Eddington, president of Maine Chapter of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, president of Penobscot Salmon Club, trustee for Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and a member of the advisory board to Baxter State Park. Among the honors, he received for his research, teaching and extension work; was the prestigious John Pearce Memorial Award from the Northeast Section of The Wildlife Society; the Professional Achievement Award from the Maine Chapter of The Wildlife Society; election to honorary membership in The (National) Wildlife Society; named to the roll of honor in the Atlantic Salmon Federation; selected for the University of Maine Distinguished Forestry-Wildlife Alumnus Award; and most recently, the Outstanding Professional Wildlife Award from the Department of Wildlife Ecology, University of Maine. In 2006 Malcolm and Dorothy Coulter’s Timberdoodle Tree Farm was named Outstanding Tree Farm in the state of Maine. Malcolm was an ardent outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, canoeing, training bird dogs, gardening, building canoes and especially exploring new places. He and his beloved wife, Dorothy, fished and/or hunted in all but two Canadian provinces, and in several states from Florida to Alaska, after his retirement in 1982. Malcolm had twins, Malcolm Jr. of Holden and Shirley Ericson of South Lebanon Township, Pa., by his first wife, Shirley McComb, who died in 1949. He married Dorothy Higgins in 1952. Their children are Russell from Casco, and twins, Nancy Astbury from Eddington and Louise Murray from Holden. There are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Norman of Suffield, Conn.; and his sister, Dotty Lou Coulter Flatt of Pocatello, Idaho. We would like to invite family and friends to join us in a celebration of his life 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Penobscot Conservation Association, North Main Street, Bre-wer.
