PATTEN, BREWER and WESTBROOK – Cora (Philpot) Bates, 95, died Feb. 14, 2007, at Springbrook Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation, Westbrook. She was born July 1, 1911, in Patten, the daughter of Arad and Mabel (Mitchell) Philpot. Cora was a graduate of Patten Academy and during her senior year she taught school in Sherman Station. During World War II she worked at Pratt & Whitney, as an inspector of airplane parts. Upon returning to Patten, she worked at Laura Scribner’s store, Katahdin Telephone Co., for Dr. Leigh Hartman, and as a telephone operator for Great Northern Paper Co., Pittston Farm. She was a member of Patten Rebekah Lodge No. 78, Eastern Star, Greenville, and Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten. She greatly enjoyed playing cards with her friends in Patten and giving rides to her friends when needed. She took part in all areas of school events, involving her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, often traveling many miles to see them play or perform. She and Del were longtime friends of John and Dorothy Gould, and were pleased and proud to be included in many of John’s books describing adventures in the north woods. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Roberta Domingo and Diana Giles and her husband, Paul, both of Brewer, and Jennifer Ryan and her husband, David, of Westbrook; nine grandchildren, Michael Giles, Coralie Giles, Roanne (Domingo) Austin, Paul D. Giles, Roger Domingo, Patricia (Giles) Ronco, Ruth Domingo, Terri (Ryan) Holbert, and Scott Ryan; 13 great-grandchildren, Jessie Mellott, Loring Giles, Sara (Giles) Babbidge, Ves (Giles) Gottliab, Matt Mellott, Sean Pulley, Eric Ronco, Ashley Austin, Caitlyn Domingo, Cameron Giles, Emily Domingo, Owen Giles, and Elizabeth Domingo; two great-great-granddaughters, Besty Babbidge and Melanie Gottliab; one sister, Marion LeBeau and her husband, Don, of North Hampton,Mass.; and two sisters-in-law, Charlotte Philpot of Exeter, N.H., and Ilona Bates of San Diego. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Delmont E. Bates, in 1975; her parents; brother, Lawrence; sisters, Lois Brown and Erdean Mullen; and one sister-in-law, Rudy Domingo. The family is greatly appreciative of the loving care of the entire staff at Springbrook Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation. She certainly felt well loved at home there. Friends may call 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church, Patten, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tae Sung Kang officiating.
