NORTH HAVEN – Corice Ermine Gillis Hurd, 73, died Monday morning, June 27, 2005, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. She was born Oct. 12, 1931, in North Haven, a daughter of Ernest E. and Melvina R. (Pettee) Gillis. Mrs. Hurd attended school in North Haven and was a graduate of North Haven High School, Class of 1950, and was a graduate of the University of Maine, Orono. Feb. 2, 1951, she married William G. Hurd in Orono. For the past 29 years, she has been employed around the island as a cook and gardener. Mrs. Hurd was chairman of the North Haven Republican Committee, a member of The Unity Guild, a 56-year member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 33 and was a Phythian Sister of the Knights of Pythias. Over the years she was formerly a member of the North Haven Library Association, the North Haven Medical Services and the North Haven School Board. Mrs. Hurd will be remembered as a voracious reader who enjoyed astrology, working on hand crafts, cooking and gardening. Mrs. Hurd is survived by a daughter, Sarah E. Cooper and her husband, Peter, of North Haven; a son, W. Guy Hurd and his wife, Fiona Anderson-Bell, of North Haven; two sisters, Elsie M. Morrison of North Haven, Elaine G. Burgess and her husband, Fletcher, of North Haven; two grandsons, Gabriel Cooper and William Hurd; a granddaughter, Annabell Hurd; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Cooper; a great-grandson, Isaak Cooper. In addition to her husband of more than 27 years, Mrs. Hurd was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald A. Gillis and Albert D. Gillis; three sisters, Marguerite G. Ladd, Miriam B. Rowe and Shirley P. Gillis. A memorial service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the North Haven Baptist Church.
