BELFAST – Dana H. Barnes Jr., 91, died Dec. 23, 2006, in Belfast. He was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Dana and Jennie Barnes Sr. Dana graduated from Syracuse University in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. In 1942, he married Constance M. King in Bangor. Until 1964 while associated with Stone and Webster Engineering of Boston, he was involved with the design of the atomic bomb and later with the design of the Nautilus. The latter part of his engineering career was spent as senior vice president of Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc, Spring Valley, N.Y. Dana was a former commodore of the Camden Yacht Club, past commodore of the Sailing Club of the Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Fla., a member of Aleppo Shrine Temple, Boston, and Mariners Masonic Lodge No. 68 AF & AM, Searsport. In his mid-50s, Dana achieved his helicopters license. Dana is survived by his wife, Constance Barnes of Belfast; a brother, Howard E. Barnes of North Carolina; and very close friends, Ann Marie and James McCarthy and their family of Wilmington, N.C. There will be no service. His ashes will be scattered over Penobscot Bay at a later date. Because of Dana’s love of animals, those wishing to do so, may donate to the spay and neuter fund, Waldo County Humane Society, P.O.
