DANIEL DAVIS ORONO – Daniel Davis, 94, was born into an immigrant Jewish family on the 11th of November 1908 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was the next-to-the-youngest of four brothers and two half-brothers. He is survived by two brothers, Alex Davis, 93, of Lake Worth, Fla., and Raymond Davis, 96, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; son, Ronald Davis, of Orono; daughter, Selma Greenfield of N. Quincy, Mass.; grandson, Aaron Gruenberg of Brooklyn, N.Y.; granddaughters, Laurel Davis of Northhampton, Mass., Coralynn Davis of Lewisburg, Pa., and Sharon Greenfield Leiman of N. Quincy, Mass.; great-grandson, Sachel Chavez Davis-Delano of Northhampton, Mass.; and his close friend, Sonia Gaffney of Deefield Beach, Fla. Daniel’s early years were spent in a part of Brooklyn, N.Y., that was rapidly transforming from agricultural to urban. He attended Brooklyn public schools, but withdrew at an early age to work in the family business, the renting of formal clothes including tuxedos. Later, helped by his dedicated wife Pearl, the business thrived to become one of the premiere rental establishments in New York City, “Davis Formal Clothes.” He was largely self-educated, an avid reader, a graphic arts and classical music enthusiast and an amateur sculptor. At 65, he retired to Florida with Pearl, living most of his 25 years in Florida at The Fountains in Lake Worth, where he continued sculpturing, and became a regular golfer. He continued an active life style, living alone for nine years after Pearl’s death in 1989. In 1998, he moved to Orono, where he lived with his son, Ronald, until moving to Orono Commons nursing home in 2001. He died peacefully in his sleep on the 24th of October, not quite reaching the age of 95. A memorial service will be held in the Boston area on the 9th of November.
