DEER ISLE and PORTLAND Daniel Ross Hodgins, 91, formerly of Deer Isle, died June 9, 2004, at a Portland healthcare facility. He was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Brewer, the son of John F. and Margaret (Hayes) Hodgins. Dan graduated from Brewer High School in 1930, received a BA from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1935, attended medical school at N.Y. University for three years before enlisting in the Army during World War II, and obtained a master’s in Social Work from Boston College in 1960. He served as a Master Sergeant in the medical corps of the U.S. Army from 1941 through 1945, and the Korean War from 1950 through 1954. This included service in Germany, the Philippines, and Korea. He was awarded a total of 11 medals during World War II. After discharge from the service, Dan worked for the Federal Department of Veteran’s Affairs in North Hampton, Mass., as a social worker at Pineland in Pownal, and later at the Veteran’s Hospital in Togus. He received the Hearts and Hands Award in 1980, an award given for showing consistent compassion, emotional support, help and guidance to veterans and their families. In 1980, he also received the Jefferson Medal, awarded to those who distinguished themselves nationally for outstanding service in the community. In 1987, he received the DAR award for outstanding devotion and generosity toward American disabled veterans. In 1991, he was awarded the USO Order of Meritorious Service. Dan attended the U.S. Army “Black Hawk” reunion every year. He loved people, the opera, antiques, and his home in Deer Isle. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their extended families. Friends are invited to meet with the family from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. June 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 531 North Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Richard E. Harvey, celebrant. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Gifts in his memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Manor, 1133 Washington Ave., Portland, ME 04103, or to a charity of your choice.
