LUBEC – Ursula Godfrey Danforth, 105, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at a Lubec healthcare facility. She was born July 21, 1898, in South Lubec, the daughter of William I. and Minnie R. Godfrey. Shortly after graduating from Lubec High School she went to Washington, D.C. as a “war worker” in the War Department of the Federal Government. She graduated from Columbus University Law School and took special courses at American University and George Washington University and accepted a position with the Personnel Classification Board (later the Civil Service Commission) where she rose to the rank of Chief Investigator. Ursula was President of L’Enfant Business and Professional Women’s Club, a member of Beta Gamma Chapter of Kappa Beta Pi (Women’s Legal Sorority) and life member of Hope Chapter, O.E.S., all in Washington, D.C. Ursula received her 80-year member Order of the Eastern Star pin from the Naomi Chapter No. 3 of Washington, D.C., in 2003. In April 2004, she was also recognized for her lifetime achievements by the Remember ME project held at the State House in Augusta. She married Dr. Earl Danforth, a native Washingtonian and they built their home at the corner of Northampton and Nebraska Avenues in the Chevy Chase section of Washington, D.C. She cherished a picture of herself with the then Secretary of War, Newton D. Baker and General Pershing. She walked daily under the front portico of the White House to and from work in the State Worker/Navy Building as it was then called. She was a guest at the White House whenever the First Ladies entertained the executive women of the government. She did much volunteer work during World Wars I and II for which she received an award from the District of Columbia. Retiring to Lubec, she was instrumental in organizing the Friends of the Library and enjoyed quilting with the Christian Temple Church Quilters in which church she was baptized 94 years ago. In addition to her parents, Ursula was predeceased by her beloved husband, Earl; her brother, Noel and her sister, Ella. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Christian Temple Church in Lubec with Pastor Gary Look officiating. Burial will follow in the Corey Cemetery.
