NEW GLOUCESTER – Darrell L. Wetherbee, 46, formerly of Freeport, died Sept. 17, 2006, in Hawijah, Tikrit, Iraq, during a hostile engagement. He was born in Salem, Ore., a son of Darrell Leland Wetherbee and Rose-Sharon Clark. His extensive public service career began in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Okinawa, Japan. He was later employed at the Maine Correctional Center, was a Freeport police officer, a deputy marshal for the Judicial Branch of the State Marshal Service and an international police officer with the Department of State. He has served in three Department of State Police Advisory Missions, which included two tours in Kosovo and one in Iraq. Darrell was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his mother; his wife, Shelia R. Wetherbee; his children, S.Sgt. Clayton Mahone, Stephanie McGuinness and Dakota Lance Wetherbee; and his brother and sisters, Daniel Wetherbee, Carol Just, Nancy Simmons and Shirley Beauchamp. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Burial will be after at Lower Gloucester Cemetery, Gloucester Hill Road, New Gloucester.
