MILO – U.S. Marine Corps retired Capt. Darrell T. Stevens passed away Nov. 15, 2006, after a short illness. He was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Milo, the son of Roger and Maude Stevens. He graduated from Milo High School in 1949 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a private shortly thereafter. He served his country with honor and distinction in the Korean War, and later during two combat tours in Vietnam, first with marine recon and secondly with the infantry, where he received the Bronze Star. Prior to embarking on his first tour of Vietnam, he received his commission and was promoted to second lieutenant. Darrell retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970, and began working at Great Northern Paper Mill, Millinocket in 1973, as a security guard. He retired from the mill in 1988. He loved spending time with his two grandsons, Nigel and Kevin Stevens of Gardiner. He was a fan of Dixieland jazz and 1920s jug band music. His favorite artists were Bix Beiderbecke, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong and Count Basie. In 1987, he was predeceased by his brother, Col. Marvin Stevens, a fellow Marine. Darrell is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara (Cook) Stevens of Milo, whom he wed April 3, 1954, in Washington, D.C.; his son, Dan Stevens and his wife, Brenda; grandsons, Nigel and Kevin, all of Gardiner; his son, Chris; his sister, Denise Robertson of Milo; his uncle, Charles Stevens of Milo; and his nephews, Kirby Robertson of Milo, Kevin Robertson of Thomaston and Joel Robertson, formerly of Milo and their families. A graveside service is planned for later at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta.
