SOUTH PARIS – David D. Munsell, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 19, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Boston, Mass., to Alexander and Margaret Munsell. As a boy and young man David spent summers at Swans Island, at the family’s home. He enjoyed sailing and at the age of 16 came within 600 miles of the North Pole on a voyage with Captain Bob Bartlett on the “Effie M. Morrissey,” now the tall ship “Ernestina.” He graduated from Yale University in 1942, with a mechanical engineering degree. During World War II, he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific as an Executive Officer on a PT boat. During his term he earned the Victory Ribbon World War II, American Area Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two stars, and a Unit Commendation for MTS Hon No. 7. David married Janney Lupton in 1950, and raised three sons. They settled in Manchester, Mass., but then moved to Bradford, in 1968 to enjoy “the good life” on their farm. He is survived by Janney Lupton of New Gloucester; two sons, Benjamin of Canton, N.C., and Patrick of New Gloucester; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his middle son, David McSherry Munsell. A Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Assembly of God Church, 50 Cottage Road, Windham, followed by a 3p.m. graveside service at the Lower Gloucester cemetery on Gloucester Hill Road, New Gloucester. Pastor Wil Can Fijn will officiate.
