HARRINGTON – David Kenneth Smith, 40, beloved father of Joshua and Erin Smith, died unexpectedly March 6, 2006. He was born Dec. 3, 1965, to Donna and Wayne Smith of Cherryfield. David grew up on the Twin Brooks Dairy Farm and many special childhood days were spent farming with his parents and siblings. He attended Cherryfield Elementary School and graduated valedictorian of Narraguagus High School in 1984. David attended the University of Maine, Machias. With great skills and pride David pursued dairy farming with his family, but later took his caring personality and love for mathematics to the profession of teaching. David connected with many students while teaching at Narraguagus High, Cherryfield Elementary and Machias Memorial High School. In 1998, David began working as an accountant for Cherryfield Foods and most recently was promoted to plant manager. David was very involved in community activities. He coached various local sports teams, took a leadership role in the Sunrise Little League Association, was a Cub Scout leader, followed in his mother’s footsteps in organizing the annual Cherryfield Salmon Run, volunteered in his children’s school and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Cherryfield. Many great years were spent playing softball with the “Scrubs,” a team he founded with his brothers one Cherryfield Fourth of July Celebration. David’s love of sports and competition were seen daily with his enthusiastic conversations about “Survivor” and his devotion to and love for the Red Sox. David also thoroughly enjoyed country music. With family and friends he rarely missed the opportunity to attend a concert. He cherished time spent with all his family and faithfully looked forward to his grandmother, Olive’s, Saturday night bean suppers in Jonesboro. Above all, David will be remembered as a tremendously devoted and loving father. Anyone that knew David, knew that his children, Josh and Erin, were the center of his life. David never missed a band performance, a sporting event, a school function, a drama performance, or a chance to show his children his love and support. At home, his dedication to his children was seen in the hours he would spend producing special birthday video memories each and every year. His expertise with video production was passed to his son, as was seen with Joshua’s excellent video celebrating his father’s 40th birthday. With his daughter, Erin, David established the special tradition of taping all episodes of the Gilmore Girls and then watching them in marathon format on the weekend. In addition to his children, David will be missed by Josh and Erin’s mother, Marie Smith of Cherryfield; his father, Wayne Smith of Cherryfield; his brother, Wayne and his fiance, Robin Douglas, of Milbridge; his sister, Frances and her husband, Robert Ashby, of Brunswick; his brother, Ron and his wife, Brittany, of Milbridge; his grandmother, Olive Smith of Jonesboro; his uncle, Stanley Smith and his wife, Donna, of Jonesboro; his uncle, Billy Brooks and his wife, Brooke, of Cherryfield; his uncle, George Brooks and his wife, Connie, of Sanford; cousins, George, Jenny, Sonja, Karen and Kristine; nieces and nephews, Jessica, Cameron, Micaela, Connor, Bayley, Tommy and Joseph; and special friends, John and Michelle Merritt of Harrington. David was predeceased by his mother, Donna Smith; his grandfather, Ellis Smith; his grandparents, George and Mae Brooks; and his uncle, Ronnie Smith. A time of visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Cherryfield, with Fr. Mark Nollete, presiding.
