LIBERTY – Dean Raymond Hannon I, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, in Belfast. He was born Dec. 3, 1948, in Waterville, the son of Raymond O. and Hilda M. (Sherman) Hannon. After graduating high school, Dean entered the U.S. Army March 18, 1968, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, two O/S Bars; and the Marksman Badge Rifle M16. He was honorable discharged March 15, 1971, with the rank of sergeant. On March 16, 1971, he married the former Leverna Gerkin and they shared 34 years together. He worked for several years at Bath Iron Works. Dean loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and recently went on a successful moose hunt with his nephew-in-law, Nelson Stevens. He was a member of the Friends and Neighbors ATV Club. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Pop-Pop will be sadly missed by his grandsons, Christopher and Zachary and the great times they had riding ATVs. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Hilda Hannon; and his sister, Hazel Choate. Dean is survived by his wife, Leverna; his son, Dean R. Hannon II and his wife, Carole, of Gorham; his daughter, Tammy Johnston and her husband, Ryan, of Oakland; his grandchildren, Christopher Dean Hannon and Zachary William Hannon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Nelson and Debra Stevens for their support during this difficult period. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Rd., Windsor, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Burial will follow at Hannan Cemetery in Palermo. Friends and family will gather at the Liberty Masonic Hall following burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dean’s memory to the Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Service. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
