WATERVILLE – Donald ‘Al’ McKinnon, 76, of Winslow, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2004, at a Water-ville hospital, after a brief illness. Al was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, the only son of Simon Peter McKinnon and Stella (Wysocki) McKinnon. He was educated and grew up in Green Point Brooklyn, N.Y. He proudly served in the Army Post-World War II. On Dec. 16, 1949, he married Ernestine ‘Tina’ Alley and together they had two sons, Gary and Dennis. Al worked for New England Telephone for over 30 years and was a member of the Pioneer Telephone Workers. He was also a Mason with the Jonesport Lodge. He became a private plane pilot at the age of 72 and belonged to the AOPA. He also enjoyed the beauty of nature along his many hikes and mountain climbing adventures. His passion was his family. He will be remembered as an accepting and generous man, compassionate and unique – a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He was a grandfather who loved his grandchildren. He is survived by his precious wife of 53 years, Ernestine ‘Tina’ McKinnon of Winslow; his son, Gary and his wife, Carol, of Sidney; his son, Dennis and his wife, Elizabeth, of Center Conway, N.H.; grandchildren, Steffanie and Brian McKinnon of Sidney, Eilidh McKinnon of Center Conway, N.H.; sister-in-law, Millie and her husband, Millard Urquhart Jr., of Bucks Harbor; nephew, Dana Urquhart of Jonesboro, and niece, Darlene Wood Of Bucks Harbor. Visiting hours will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville, ME 04901. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Veilleux Funeral Home. Internment will be at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery on the Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta, following the service.
