WALTHAM – Donald Bartlett “Don” Matthews, 75, died May 15, 2006, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born July 22, 1930, in Howland, the son of Archibald Duncan and Rena Josephine (Bartlett) Matthews. Don was in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer N. K. Perry DDR883 as a machinist, retiring with the rank of chief. He moved to Maine upon retirement. Don was a member of the VFW of Ellsworth and the Tin Can Sailors. He is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Alice Matthews of Waltham; daughters, Theresa LaPointe and husband, Alan, of Surry, Tammi Lynn McGinty of Maryland, Sherri Catli, Gloriann Rierson and husband, Brian, both of California; son, Richard Freels and significant other, Sandy, of Hancock; grandchildren, Donnie, Joseph, Jacob, Nicole, Josh, Misty, Cheyenne and Shasta; sisters, Fran Carmen of California and Natalie Weddle of Washington state. He was predeceased by three sisters, Norma, Phyllis and Dorothy. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 19.
