DENNYSVILLE – Donald Curtis, 78, loving father and friend, passed on to join his Creator and Lord of Peace and Love on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004. He died peacefully, surrounded in prayer by family, in the home shared with his beloved friend and partner of six years, Phyllis Sprague. Don served his country in the U.S. Army, Pacific Theater during World War II. Afterwards he returned to serve his community for the rest of his life. The passion that other men put into sports or hobbies, he showed in caring for his family and world neighborhood. This he carried over into political debate and world concerns. Donald lived a personal version of his deeply-felt Catholic faith, quietly and with humility, finding life-long spiritual inspiration in the weekly liturgy and fellowship at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pembroke. He worked many years in the machine shop at the American Can Company plant in Lubec, becoming the master mechanic. He later served as a millwright at the Georgia Pacific paper mill in Woodland. During all his years, until cancer slowed him down at the end, he performed welding, heavy mechanical repair, excavation and other services for his community. He loved sharing everything, whether his garden, his abilities, or his family gatherings along the Hardscrabble River. He was predeceased on Sept. 10 1985, by his beloved wife of 38 years, Constance “Connie” Jamieson Curtis, mother of his nine children; also by a son, David W.; a grandson, Gordon “G.R” Seavey Jr.; and a brother, Keith. He is survived by four sons, Donald R. of Levant, Steven A. with his wife, Lida, Corey L. with his wife, Andrea, and John G. all of Dennysville; four daughters, Doreen E. Kilton with her husband, Allen, of Dennysville, Jeanne L. Seavey with her husband, Gordon, of Alexander, Juanita C. Trott with her husband, Judson Sr., of Dennysville, and Bobie-Jo A. Carver with her husband, Glenn, of Pembroke; four brothers, Raymond, Richard Sr., Alton and Myron, all of the Dennysville area; two sisters, Alma Curtis of Edmonds, and Barbara Gaylord of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 23 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. Donald will also be missed by extended family, Sharon and Stan Lozier, Sheila and Chris Libby, Debbie Sprague, Diane and Barry Kelly, as well as daily friends Ray and Arline Antone, Clyde and Barbara Lingley, Bill Sawtelle, and so many other special friends. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 15, 2004 at the Flagg Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pembroke with the Rev. Mark Nollette celebrant, interment in the Dennysville Cemetery.
