ACTON, MASS. – Russell E. “Russ” Dow, 81, formerly of Dover, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at his home in Acton, Mass., following a brief illness. He was the husband of Irene (Fowler) Dow, to whom he was married for 57 years. Mr. Dow was born March 5, 1923, in Dover-Foxcroft, a son of the late LeRoy Pearl and Margaret (Stoddard) Dow. He served with distinction with the 10th U.S. Army Air Forces, 4th Combat Cargo Group in the China-Burma-India theatre of war during World War II, and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1950, with a degree in Forestry. Mr. Dow was a well-known New England lumber specialist for many years representing the Plunkett-Webster Company of New Rochelle, N.Y., the Heywood-Wakefield Company in Gardner, Mass., and later as a self-employed lumber broker prior to his retirement in 1986. He was an active sportsman and outdoorsman and a true friend to all who knew him. After retirement, his primary enjoyments were his family and many friends, fishing, gardening, and spending time at his summer cottage at Sebac Lake. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Dr. Russell A. of Portland, Ore., James of Brunswick, Kenneth of Acton, Mass., Robert of Sterling, Mass. and Thomas of Asheboro, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Dow Warren of Dover-Foxcroft; a brother. Dr. John P. Dow of Pittsfield; six granddaughters, Andrea, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Megan, Matia and Jennifer; and three grandsons, Alex, Joshua and Benjamin. Visiting hours are from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept.16, at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Mass Ave., Rte 111, Acton, Mass. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, in the Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road, Acton. Burial is in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton.
