PENOBSCOT – Donald Danforth Edinger Sr., 83, died Nov. 14, 2005, at a Blue Hill hos-pital. He was born July 24, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of Ernest H. and Elizabeth V. (Pettit) Edinger. A proud World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946 in the 1307 Engineer Construction Battalion, in the South Pacific, the Philippines and New Guinea and he earned the rank of Sergeant. He was proud to have met and served under General Douglas MacArthur. Don graduated from Patterson State College, N.J. and earned a masters degree from Montclair State Teachers College, N.J. He began his teaching career in New Jersey public schools before moving his family to Maine in 1968 for a position at the Asa Adams School, Orono. He began teaching at the Weatherbee School, Hampden and coaching baseball and soccer at Hampden Academy. Known to his students as “Mr. E.” he was proud to have coached Mike Bordick who progressed into the major leagues. Don retired from teaching and coaching in 1987. A historian, Don was very active for 10 years in the Sullivan’s Co. 6 Lincoln Regiment Massachusetts Militia. He and his wife attended East Bucksport United Methodist Church. Don is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne J. Edinger of Penobscot; two daughters, Debra Studley and her husband, Terry and Dale Edinger all of Veazie; their mother, Jeannette Edinger of Veazie; sister, Barbara Taylor and her husband, Jack, of Maryland; daughter-in-law, Carole Bradshaw of Massachusetts; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many close friends including, Michael and Elaine Belinsky. Don was predeceased by two sons, Donald Edinger Jr. M.D. and David Edinger; granddaughter, Erika. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Mrs. Edinger would like to extend her sincere appreciation to the staff of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Hancock County Homecare Hospice for the wonderful care that Don received.
