DONALD E. ‘RED’ WELTON GALES FERRY, Conn.- Donald E. “Red” Welton, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at L & M Hospital in New London. Donald was born to Walter and Isabelle (Blackmore) Welton. After receiving his degree in theology, “Red,” as he was more commonly known, entered the U.S. Navy. In 1958, he married his wife, Helen (Konczak). Red served his country with pride and honor for 30 years before retiring. He started his naval career as an enlisted submarine “I C” man, earned a commission and retired as a commander, assuming many positions in repair and production activities at the Naval Submarine Base, Groton. He also taught at the Submarine School in Groton. Thereafter he worked for Electric Boat as a planner and retired from that position in 1994. He was also a member of the Pawcatuck Masons. Donald “Red” Welton was very patriotic throughout his life, flying his flag proudly each and every day. He loved his country and was a loving father. He was known for his kindness and willingness to help anyone at anytime. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 1986. Together they had one son, Roger D. Welton; and one daughter, Gail DiMarco, both of whom survive him. Red also is survived by two sisters, Marion Welton and Evelyn Thorton; two grandchildren, Daniel and Dana DiMarco, and many nieces and nephews. His father also predeceased him. A funeral service will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at the Ledyard Assembly of God Church. Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Gales Ferry Funeral Home of Church & Allen.
