SUN CITY CENTER, FLA. and BAYSIDE – Donald Edward York died Jan. 8, 2005. He was born May 3, 1913, in Howland, the son of Fred and Minnie (Pelkey-Lovejoy) York. Upon graduation from Howland High School, he attended Hebron Academy and the Maine School of Commerce. In 1934, he was employed by Great Northern Paper Co. in Millinocket as an accountant, rising to the position of controller and treasurer of the corporation. He resided there for 31 years before moving to Bronxville, N.Y., in 1965. In 1968, he joined Fraser Paper Co. Ltd. of Edmundston, N.B. as executive vice president – finance. Upon retirement in 1973, he and his wife lived in Bayside in the summer and wintered in Sun City Center, Fla. Mr. York was a member of the First Congregational Church in Millinocket, serving on many of its governing committees. He was involved in local scouting and was an active participant in Millinocket civic affairs. For several years, he served as a director of the Millinocket Trust Co and the Millinocket General Hospital. He was a founding member and past president of the Hillcrest Golf Club, and a former member of the Siwanoy Country Club of Bronxville. He was a member of the Sun City Center Security Squad for many years. Among Mr. York’s proudest achievements was his 65-year association with the masons. He became master of Nollesemic Lodge No. 205 in 1950 and high priest of Mt. Katahdin R.A.C. No. 60 in 1951, and a noble of Anah Temple in 1952. On Aug. 7, 1937, he was united in marriage with his dear wife, Clarice Louise Coon, who passed away in July 1986. He is survived by a son, Donald F. York of Sun City Center and a daughter, Sara Ellen Jenkins (Jeffrey Wiggs) of Aurora, Colo.; a granddaughter, Shannon McLaughlin and her husband, Brian and two great-grandchildren, Bailey Shea McLaughlin and John Robert McLaughlin of Aurora, Colo.; her a sister, Lillian Marquis and her husband, Clement, of Passadumkeag; and a sister-in-law, Tillie York of Howland. He is also survived by several beloved nieces, nephews and many caring friends, both in Florida and Maine. A brother, Richard Arnold York, predeceased him in 1997; as did his sister, Pauline (York) Long in 1989. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the East Millinocket Congregational Church.
