BAR HARBOR and LAKE WALES, Fla. – Donald H. “Spike” Alley, 73, died peacefully and unexpect-edly Oct. 26, 2007, at his winter home in Lake Wales, Fla. He was born May 21, 1934, to Howard O. and Thelma (Partridge) Alley, both deceased. Spike was raised in Salisbury Cove, attended Eden Baptist Church in his youth and graduated Bar Harbor High School in 1952. As a young man of driving age, Spike began work as a truck driver and had a lifelong passion for heavy equipment and all things mechanical. After graduation, Spike enlisted in the U.S. Army and also started a family with his first wife, Pat Jordan. Together they had two sons, Donald and Dale. With his second wife, Charlotte Thorne Bordeaux, he was “daddy” to Peggy, Lynnie, Tommy and Joani. Self-employed as a general contractor, Spike developed the Alley Pit, Hulls Cove, which he later sold to Harold Mac Quinn. Spike also worked for Jackson Lab, first at Ham Station and later at the Bar Harbor lab as sterilizer operator. Spike put his hands to many a cord of wood and his campfire wood is reputed to be the finest in the area. Selling his dry hardwood in the front dooryard, Spike swore by the honor system: payment was simply placed in the tin can. Spike’s passion for things mechanical, for industry and hard work, was matched by his appetite for good company. He also greatly enjoyed repeated journeys on the M/V Bluenose and junkets to Foxwoods, Conn., and Atlantic City, N.J. Spike is survived by three sons, Donald E. Alley and companion, Cindy O’Neill, of Bar Harbor, Dale E. Alley and wife, Debbie, of Palmyra and Thomas O. Alley and wife, Sherri, of Bar Harbor; three daughters, Peggy Douglas and husband, Ed, of Salisbury Cove, Lynn Graham and husband, Gordon, of Bar Harbor and Joani Teach and husband, Miles, of Islamorada, Fla., and Bar Harbor; two sisters, Mary Welz of Brimfield, Conn., and Nancy Farrenkopf and her husband, Bill, of Ellsworth; one brother, William Alley and his wife, Louise, of Waterville; 11 grandchildren, Ethan and Eric Fogg, Robert Alley, Cecilie Alley, Becky Alley Carr and husband, Blay, Lucy Williams and her companion, Alton Pinkham, David, Emily and Ian Graham, Tyler and Nick Teach; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Brett Carr and Emilynn Pinkham; a stepgranddaughter, Felicia Teach; many nieces and nephews; his third wife, Alice Ryan of Old Town. In addition to his parents, Spike was predeceased by a brother, Ronald E.
