MARS HILL – Donald K. Barnes, 82, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at a Mars Hill health-care facility. He was born July 6, 1923, in Easton, the son of Raymond and Angie (Hawksley) Barnes. Donald served his country during World War II and had been a member of the American Legion William Cousins Post No. 118 for many years. He also served his community as a volunteer firefighter. Donald owned the first ski shop in Mars Hill and for many years farmed as well as worked for the Mars Hill Water Company where he retired. Donald was recently awarded an honorable high school diploma from Easton High School which he was very proud of. Donald loved to fish, hunt, and in later years golf. He is survived by two sons, Donald R. Barnes of Calais, Michael Barnes and his wife, Cindy, of Redding, Calif.; two daughters, Sharon Webster and Barry of Lakeville, Leesa Smith and her husband, Gordon, of Raymond; six grandchildren, Tadd Barnes, Jesse and Jeremy Barnes, Jeffri-Lynn Dyer, Sam Webster, Keegan Smith; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl Barnes and his wife, Rose, of Presque Isle, Carlton Barnes and his wife, Gloria, of Bingham; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Marcia E. (Grass) Barnes; four brothers, Ray, Gerald, Leonal, Milton; and a sister, Rowena Rogerson. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at the Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. Friends may call from noon until time of service. A military committal will take place following the service at Kings Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make donations in Donald’s memory to the American Legion William Cousins Post No. 118. Arrangements in care of Duncan Funeral Home.
