INDIAN ISLAND – Donald R. Nelson Sr., 81, passed away Thursday Sept. 7, 2006, surrounded by his family at his residence. He was born Feb. 24, 1925, on Indian Island, the son of the late John S. and Alphonsine (Ouellette) Nelson. Donald will be remembered as a simple man who was blessed richly with spirituality. His devotion to his wife and family was evident in the love he so unconditionally displayed. Donald graduated from Old Town High School, Class of 1947. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired after 23 years of dedication. Donald was a faithful communicant and member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island. He is survived and will be sadly missed by two sons, Donald R. Nelson Jr. of Old Town, David Nelson and his companion, Vicki Goughnour, of Brewer; two daughters, Ruby Nelson of Indian Island and Kathleen Porter and her husband, William, of Madison, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Tracey Nelson of Old Town; six grandchildren, Jessica M. Nelson, Shauna L. Nelson, Emma K. Nelson, Chad A. Nelson, Christopher Nicola and Timothy A. Nicola Jr.; sister, Velma Jones and her husband, Ronald, of Enterprise, Ala.; brother, James Nelson of Indian Island; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Jacqueline (Norwood) Nelson; sister, Bernice Lolar; five brothers, Norman, John Jr., Kenneth, Hilary and Earl Nelson. Friends may call 3 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island, with the Rev. Thomas Farley, celebrant and Deacon Fred Harrigan, homilist. Casual dress is requested; denim and t-shirts. Burial will be held at the Tribal Cemetery, Indian Island, after the service.
