VAN BUREN – Donald Thomas Riddle, 86, died July 20, 2006, at a Caribou hosp-ital. He was born March 20, 1920, in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Clarence and Alice (Lenhoff) Riddle. For many years he was employed as a draftsman and road designer. He also received a degree in animal husbandry and worked in the dairy industry for several years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 724th Field Artillery, and was a Purple Heart recipient after being injured during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Don was a member of the Masonic Lake Lodge No. 157 AF & AM of Crown Point, Ind. for more than 60 years. He was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 20 of Crown Point, Ind. and a former assistant scoutmaster for Troop 544 in Eustis, Fla. Don and his family moved to Van Buren after more than 40 years in the Deland, Fla. area. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, JoEllen (Kenney) Riddle and their daughter, Esther, 10, of Van Buren; son, John Matthew of Sykesville, Md.; daughter, Phyllis Bierbaum and husband, Mike, of Tallahassee, Fla.; mother-in-law, Ruth Padgett of Deland, Fla.; grandson, Ethan Thomas Smalenbach of Deltona, Fla.; and several other grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his brother, Dick Riddle. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stockholm with Pastor Jim Morgan officiating. Interment will be at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Caribou.
