BAR HARBOR – Doris Edna Karst, 101, died July 15, 2008, at Birch Bay Village, Bar Harbor. She was born March 14, 1907, in Mount Desert, the daughter of George E. and Della (Brown) Karst. She was educated in the Bar Harbor schools and graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1924, where she received the Kane Scholarship. She graduated from Farmington Teachers College in 1927, later graduating from the University of Maine with majors in English and history. She was awarded a University Scholarship and elected to Phi Kappa Phi, honorary scholastic society. She began her teaching career at Mexico Junior High School. She taught 11 years at Buker School, Augusta. She taught American government to seniors and civics to freshman at Stearns High School, Millinocket. She later taught social studies at Brighton Academy. She taught one year at Parker Junior High School, Reading, Mass. She finished her career by teaching English in Exeter, N.H. She also taught music in various schools. Upon retiring, she returned to Bar Harbor, where she worked many years for Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, assisting Blue Nose passengers in finding late night accommodations, which were scarce in those days. This entailed drawing maps to guide them throughout unfamiliar territory. No one got lost. Doris was an active member of Bar Harbor Congregational Church, secretary of the auxiliary, belonged to Senior Citizens Club and was secretary of Woman’s Literary Club. She loved to give tea parties and one of her prized possessions was a guest book containing 1000 names. She often entertained her guests at the piano or as a reader of poetry. She was on the committee, which started Meals for Me programs, where she often entertained by reading poetry. Doris is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth Karst and Kathlene of Ellsworth; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert.
