ROCKLAND – Doris Jesse Overlock Miller, 98, died April 12, 2004, at Shore Village Nursing Home, Rockland. She was born Jan. 22, 1906, in Washington, the daughter of Jesse and Maude Ludwig Overlock. She grew up on the family farm in Washington. She attended high school at MCI in Pittsfield, as Washington had no high school, and graduated from Cony High School in 1924, where the family lived while Jesse was in the Maine Legislature. Doris worked as a schoolteacher in one-room schools in Union, Alna, Washington, Coopers Mills, Liberty, and Appleton. She would work a semester to earn money for college and go to school a semester. She attended Farmington State Teachers College and graduated from Castine Normal School in 1932. On Aug. 30, 1935, Doris and Richardson eloped and were married in Portsmouth, N.H. She joined Evening Star Grange in Washington, changing to Seven Tree Grange in Union, when she married Dick, and they changed to the Pioneer Grange in East Union, when Seven Tree closed. She was active in several churches and a member of the People’s United Methodist Church in Union. She was an active member of the Knox-Lincoln Extension. Doris and Dick were always an enthusiastic audience for their grandchildren’s music, theater and dance performances. Doris will be remembered for her full cookie jar, homemade donuts, the ability to spell any word even in her advanced years, and her Sunday rides when she would suggest, “let’s take that road, we haven’t been down there before.” Doris and Dick were the “Merry Bean Snippers” helping their daughter and daughter-in-law prepare garden produce for canning, while keeping the little ones occupied.
