PALMYRA – Dorothea L. “Dot” Welch, 78, died unexpectedly July 14, 2006, at a Skowhegan healthcare facility after a long illness. She was born Nov. 30, 1927, in Plymouth, the daughter of Nelson and Marjorie (Palmer) Stackpole. She was educated in Plymouth and Newport schools. Dorothea married Henry G. Welch, who died in 1982 after 39 years of marriage. “Dot” worked at Snowflake Canning Co. in Corinna for several years, until it was destroyed by fire. She then worked as a cook at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield for several years. She retired from Northeast Shoe in Pittsfield, due to ill health in 1980. “Dot” loved her cats and was always taking in strays, even the neighborhood cats would come around to receive an extra meal from “Dot.” She was an avid bird watcher and loved to feed “her birds.” She is survived by four daughters, Marjorie Burpee and her companion, Curley Braley, of Hermon, Christine Morancie and her husband, Edmond, of Pittsfield, Rose Neal and her husband, Richard, of Palmyra and Penney Bennett and her husband, Scott, of Stafford Springs, Conn.; one brother, Wallace Stackpole of Cambridge; one sister, Maxine Fitzgerald of Skowhegan; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed by her favorite cat, “Cricket.” She was predeceased by her parent, her husband and a sister, Beverly Wilder. Friends may call noon-2 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 34 High St., Newport. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev.
