SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Dorothy C. Vose, 78, died peacefully May 16, 2008, at home. She was born June 21, 1929, in Houlton, daughter of Herbert C. and Gladys (Oakes) Curtis. Dorothy’s family moved to Bangor when she was 3 and Dorothy was educated in Bangor schools, graduating from Bangor High School in 1947. In 1952 Dorothy graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts and nursing. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. In 1956 Dorothy married George T. Vose, a Bangor High School classmate. In the course of her professional career, she was supervisor of Surgery at Eastern Maine General Hospital, Bangor; assistant supervisor of Surgery and Graduate Education at New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston; director of nursing at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth; and for 20 years was employed by School Union No. 98 as school nurse at Pemetic Elementary and Tremont Elementary schools on Mount Desert Island, until her retirement in 1993. She served on the board of directors of Mount Desert Island Alcohol and Drug Abuse Group, Acadia Family Center, Center for Human Genetics, and was a member of St. Peter’s Church Parish Council. She loved her home in Southwest Harbor and the community in which she worked. Her husband, children and grandchildren were very dear to her and gave her many enjoyable and wonderful times. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, George T. Vose of Southwest Harbor; five children and twelve grandchildren. Her children are Catherine V. Doane and her husband, Mark, of Chesterfield, N.H., Mary V. Martin and her husband, Scott, of Orrington, Mar-garet G. Vose of Southwest Harbor, Rachel S. Vose and her husband, Angus Badger, of Jackson, N.H., and Thomas C. Vose and his wife, Jennifer, of South Portland. Her grandchildren are Christopher Doane of North Fort Myers, Fla., Megan Doane of Chesterfield, N.H., Robert and Emily Martin of Orrington, Alexandra and Nicholas Stanley and their father, David A. Stanley of Southwest Harbor, Malcolm, Nina, Helen and Willem Badger of Jackson, N.H., and Gretchen and Thomas J. Vose of South Portland. She has one sister-in-law, Gretchen V. Ablondi of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; one nephew, William Ablondi of New York City; two nieces, Margot Rutledge of Westboro, Mass., and Gretchen Ablondi of Newton Centre, Mass.; special friends, Margaret Johnston, Ellen Mercer, Janice Sinnett and Ruth Grindle.
