BAR HARBOR – Dorothy Julia Bruce, 99, died Jan. 11, 2008, at a local hospital. She was born April 15, 1908, in Somersworth, N.H., the daughter of Oscar R. and Mary E. (Sullivan) Hobbs. She attended Nasson College for Women and the University of New Hampshire as a domestic science major. Dorothy was married to G. Gordon R. Bruce for 67 years and he predeceased her in 2002. She always looked forward to each new national park assignment they had and she enjoyed entertaining their many friends. Dorothy was a volunteer at the Emerson School Library, was a member of Daughters of Isabella, Mount Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary, the Garden Club and Literary Club, all of Bar Harbor. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Ann Bruce of Bar Harbor; and her son, Franklin Bruce and wife, Pat, of Franklin; two granddaughters, Leah Ott of Indiana and Rebecca Gobel of Tennessee; and one grandson, Tim Bruce of Maine. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Jordan-Fernald, Bar Harbor Chapel, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor. A funeral Mass with a burial afterward at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor, will be announced in the spring.
