ADDISON – Dorothy M. Thaxter, 86, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 18, 2007. She was born June 6, 1920, in Machiasport, the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Nellie (Copp) Pettegrow. As a young child, Mrs. Thaxter grew up on the coast of Maine residing at various lighthouses that her father was caretaker for. During her career, she worked at several sardine canneries along the coast, starting in Addison and working at the last operational cannery on the coast, Stinson Sardine Factory, Prospect Harbor, retiring in 1978. She was a 70-year member of Indian River Grange and a member of the state and national grange for several years. She was a member of the Church on the Hill, Addison for more than 30 years. Her enjoyments include, crocheting, knitting and taking care of houseplants and being with her grandchildren. She shared 44 years of marriage to Philip Thaxter, who died in 1985. Family members include two daughters, Eva Belanger and friend, Terry Smith and Lillis Norton and husband, Terry; seven grandchildren, Rachel Collora and husband, John, Angela Junkins and husband, Glenn, Nancy Stephan, Karen Libeson and husband, Michael, Craig Robinson and wife, Sally, Michelle Beaulieu and husband, Carl, and Philip Rusecky and fiance, Hillary; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Farrell Pettegrow and wife, Dorothy; and several nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Wescogus Cemetery, Addison. There will be no visiting hours.
