ISLESBORO – Douglas E. Gray, 76, died Oct. 8, 2003, at his residence in Islesboro after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 20, 1927, the son of Emory and Florence Gray. Doug’s work history consisted of serving in Japan from 1945-47, as a Corporal in the Army, a 2nd Mate Merchant Marine with Sun Oil Co., for 22 years, a deck hand with the Maine State Ferry Service for 18 years, retiring in 1990 from the Ferry Service. He then worked on the grounds crew for the Islesboro Golf Course for eight years. Doug is survived by his three daughters, Stormi Wentworth, Sami Gray and her husband, Sergeant James C. Bates, currently serving with the Army National Guard in Iraq, Sue Wentworth and her husband, James; his sister, Verna Pendleton; five grandchildren, Andrew, Peter and Cameron Wentworth, Jimmy and Cassie Bates; a special niece, Shirley Estabrook; and several nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Steve and Howard; and three sisters, Alta, Barbara and Irene. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at the Second Baptist Church, 108 Main Road, Islesboro, followed by a reception hosted by the Second Baptist Sewing Circle. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Evergreen Cemetery, Cape Rosier Road, Harborside. Contributions may be made in Douglas Gray’s memory to the Second Baptist Church, P.O. Box 17, Islesboro, ME 04848 and/or the Islesboro Health Center, P.O. Box 137, Islesboro, ME 04848. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
