DOUGLAS EDWARD BIRT EAST MILLINOCKET Douglas Edward Birt, 56, died peacefully Aug. 7, 2006, with his loving family at his side, at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, N.Y. He was born April 22, 1950, in Bangor, the son of Walter A. and Dorothy (Larlee) Birt. Douglas grew up in East Millinocket and graduated from Schenck High School in 1968. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the East Millinocket Congregational Church. Doug graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1972 and sailed on various tankers and cargo ships for 33 years. Known for his hard work and dedication, he started as a third engineer and finished his career proudly as a chief engineer. Doug recently retired and in the last few years he worked as a part-time instructor at the Calhoon MEBA School in Easton, Md. and recently was also teaching at the Global Maritime Transportation School at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, N.Y. Doug was very proud of reaching a goal that allowed him to share his knowledge and passion for marine engineering with his colleagues and students. Doug was a kind, gentle, generous man with a big heart, a wonderful sense of humor who enjoyed the company of his family and friends, old and new. He enjoyed family vacations, swimming, read-ing, movies, cooking and going for impromptu car rides. Doug was always ready to engage in a discussion involving politics or the stock market. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Randi of East Millinocket; his mother, Dorothy of Millinocket; his son, Aaron and special friend, Erica Butler, of Old Orchard Beach; his “baby girl,” Kristen O’Don-nell and husband, Ryan, of Manchester, N.H.; and his best canine friend, Bobo. Doug will be remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father, Walter A.; and his brother, Walter H. “Butch” Birt. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Bouchard-Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the East Millinocket Congregational Church. Interment will take place after the funeral services at the East Millinocket Cemetery.
