CHERRYFIELD – Douglas G. Campbell, 82, passed away peacefully Tues-day morning, Nov. 13, 2007, at home. A lifelong resident of Cherryfield, he was born there Aug. 31, 1925, the son of the late Thomas L. and Agnes (Cummings) Campbell. He graduated from Cherryfield Academy, Class of 1945 and went on to graduate from New England Institute of Anatomy, Science and Embalming, Boston, Class of 1947. Douglas served during the Korean War, and held memberships in the following fraternal/business organizations, Cherryfield -Milbridge Rotary; Narraguagus American Legion Post No. 8; Narraguagus Lodge of Masons No. 88, Cherryfield; Valley of Portland, 32nd Degree Masons; the Scottish Rites Anah Temple Shrine, Bangor; and the Washington County Shrine Club. He was also a former member of the Maine Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. Douglas owned and operated Campbell Funeral Home, Cherryfield for 37 years. Upon selling his business to the late Willard M. Kelley Jr., he continued working for Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home until 2007. Doug was passionate about music, and in younger days he played in various performing bands. Additionally, he sang bass in several barbershop quartets and at Cherryfield First Congregational Church. As an enthusiastic tree farmer, Doug spent many hours outdoors enjoying the natural world. A masterful storyteller and practical joker, he loved a good laugh. When one thinks of him, remember his stories and smile. He shared 50 years of marriage with the late Dorothy (Cook) Campbell, who died in 2005. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Campbell. Doug is survived by his daughter, Pamela Campbell of Sullivan; sister-in-law, Cookie Goulart of Cherryfield; a sister, Dorothy Forsyth of Brewer; several nieces; and two dearly devoted longtime friends, C. Foster Mathews and Carolyn Seletzky, both of Cherryfield. His finest and final hours were spent with his feline companion, Autumn. A traditional service of remembrance will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, with Pastor Lewis Cushman officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with Doug’s family 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Private burial will be after at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield.
