TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – Dr. Hubert E. Saunders, 65, passed peace-fully Sept. 1, 2006, at home, after a heroic battle with cancer. A native of Lubec, he moved to Florida in 2001 from Bangor. He graduated from Citadel, Charleston, S.C., and earned a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He achieved the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Hubie was employed in executive positions with Agway Fuels, Webber Energy and R.H. Foster Energy. He was a member of the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow and the Lions and Kiwanis clubs. He loved reading, boating, the Red Sox, animals and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; two daughters, Dr. Suzanne and Stephanie L., both of Maine; son, Don H. and his wife, Jennifer, of Virginia; granddaughter, Aisha G. of Maine; two sisters, Gail O’Steen of Florida and Dawn Earley of Connecticut; and Aunt Dorothy Blanch of Maine. His first wife, Gail, predeceased him. A memorial service will be celebrated 11 a.m. Sept. 7, at Dobies Funeral Home, 701 East Tarpon Ave., Tarpon Springs, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760.
