DEDHAM and ORONO – Dr. Mark P. Boyd, 71, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, with his family by his side, at his home, after a short illness. He was born Aug. 21, 1936, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of Dr. Luke H. and Helen Elizabeth (Patterson) Boyd. Mark was one of six children, three brothers, Matthew, Luke and John; and two sisters, Joan and Susan. Their family lived in the small town of Bemus Point on Chataqua Lake in Western New York state. Mark attended Bemus Point Central School and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1954. Mark graduated from Niagara University, Lewiston, N.Y., in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences. That same year, he married the love of his life, Mary Alice Sheridan from Jamestown, N.Y., a classmate of his from Jamestown High School. Together they left the hills of Western New York and began their life journey together by going to Washington, D.C., where Mark attended Georgetown University School of Dentistry. Mark graduated from Georgetown University in 1962, with a D.D.S degree and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force as a dental officer. Before going on active duty, Mark spent most of that first summer as a dentist working at the Georgetown Dental School, attending to the needs of the very first Peace Corps. Mark then went on active duty with the U.S. Air Force and was assigned to Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama and permanent assignment to Loring Air Force Base, Limestone. While at Loring, Mark and Mary both fell much in love with Maine and her people and decided to make this their home. In the fall of 1964, Mark’s active duty obligation with the Air Force ended and he, Mary and their son, Pat moved to 62 Main St., Orono. They had a home with an attached office at that location
